U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno announced on November 27, 1996 that the 50 States and three territories have been awarded $131.5 million in grants for fiscal year 1997 under the 1994 Crime Law to improve law enforcement, prosecution, and victim service responses to domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault.
Abstract
The grants were awarded under the STOP (Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors) Violence Against Women formula grant program less than 5 weeks after the applications were received from the States and less than 60 days after the Justice Department received its fiscal year 1997 appropriation. States will use their STOP grant funds to build on their current efforts by strengthening enforcement of protection orders and improving education for judges and other court officers. The awards mark the third year of the STOP Violence Against Women formula grant program, which was authorized by the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 as part of the 1994 Crime Law. In fiscal year 1996 all 53 States and territories received a total of $119.6 million to continue to enhance the criminal justice response to such violence and expand and increase services for victims. This year, $145 million was available for the STOP program, an increase of $15 million over the fiscal year 1996 appropriation. Each State received a minimum of $500,000 and additional funds based on population. A list of fiscal year 1997 STOP grant awards for each State is provided.
