The survey was self-administered in large group settings in the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. The questionnaire had 94 items. Results were used to develop statewide estimates. Three-fourths of all 8th graders and slightly more than half of the 10th and 12th graders indicated that they used none of the illicit drugs. A total of 23.5 percent of the 8th graders, 42.8 percent of the 10th graders, and 47 percent of the 12th graders reported that they were current users of at least one of the following drugs: marijuana, tranquilizers, quaaludes, amphetamines, heroin, hashish, hallucinogens, barbiturates, solvents, and methamphetamines. Findings also revealed a continuation of the increase in marijuana use that had been noted in the 1973 and 1975 surveys. The five variables with the greatest influence on drug use were academic grade average, spending money available, source of spending money, college plans, and sex.
