At the end of the year 3,810 youths were in programs operated by DFY. This total included 2,972 youths adjudicated as juvenile delinquents, who were ages 7-15 years of age at the time they committed an act that would be a crime if committed by an adult. An additional 464 juveniles were adjudicated juvenile offenders and placed in secure centers. Three hundred thirty-eight youths were adjudicated persons in need of supervision, and 36 were adjudicated as other. One hundred sixteen youths were in day programs. A total of 1,756 youths were screened at intake for special needs. Seventy-three percent needed drug abuse treatment, 33 percent needed mental health services, 24 percent needed special education services, 11 percent needed health services, 8 percent needed sex offender services, 4 percent spoke limited English, and 2 percent had mental retardation.
