The approximately 260 participants of the First World Conference on New Trends in Criminal Investigation and Evidence shared a particular interest in the criminal justice system in action and its new trends.
Abstract
The conference took place December 1-5, 1995 at The Hague, Netherlands. The participants came from some 50 countries and from different fields. The participants' shared interests resulted from the increasing internationalization of criminal law in areas such as new developments in technology and its uses in investigation. A discussion of video surveillance, night-vision equipment, and concealed items detectors noted potential regulatory issues, including the location of the surveillance, the intrusiveness of the surveillance, and whether the suspect implicitly consents to the search. Major themes during the conference were the generality of the topic of criminal investigations across the various national criminal justice systems, the generality of criminal evidence across fields, and the generality of criminal evidence along the various countries' rules of evidence.
