Programs for incarcerated mothers and their children in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Canada are surveyed, based on telephone interview and questionnaire data. These programs pertain to recidivism reduction, prison nurseries, child care, parenting classes, childrearing attitudes, furloughs, family and conjugal visits, visitation, family advocacy, and support services. Findings from literature reviews of works in sociology, psychology, psychiatry, social work, law, child development, criminal justice, and corrections are also reviewed. Book chapters specifically describe the range of program options available to States, legal issues involved in permanency planning and medical care for incarcerated parents and their children, and AIDS in correctional facilities. Parenting program policy statements from the American Correctional Association and the Federal Bureau of Prisons are included, along with a list of community programs and resources.
