The School of Justice and Safety Administration (SJSA) at Miami-Dade Community College in Miami has established a multimedia computer-based training laboratory to assist criminal justice students in learning job-related skills.
Abstract
The laboratory has 30 IBM multimedia computers complemented by a file server. Each computer can be used individually or through the server. The SJSA serves more than 28 police agencies, two corrections agencies, a fire academy, and private security each year through about 10 classes with an average size of about 35 students. Interactive software packages help students study, review, and retain material taught in the instructional modules. An average of 30 students use the computer-aided instruction during their break times and lunch hours each day. Students also use the Internet to obtain information from around the country and the world and to communicate via electronic mail with others in the field of criminal justice. The SJSA plans to connect the laboratory to a regional network to permit information exchange among criminal justice facilities and allow uniform training through the use of interactive computer programs.
