Annual jail inspections begun in 1987 provided the State's first opportunity to collect jail data systematically. Now each jail annually provides the State with specific information on capacity, average population, types of offenders, housing and meal cost per day, critical incidents, staffing salaries, and other topics. Activities of professional organizations complement the efforts of the Bureau of Adult Detention. Improvements in information technology have also begin to link the State to its 88 counties. The State Department of Rehabilitation and Correction developed a home page as part of its Web site in 1995. Internet users can obtain publications and address and telephone listings for State agencies and its prisons. The information superhighway offers endless possibilities for collecting and disseminating jail information in the future as well. Illustration
