The two-phase planning and construction of the facility will be completed in November 1996. Inmate programs are a major focus and include a high school equivalency and literacy program, drug education and counseling, and programs focusing on social skills and job placement assistance. SILD is open to certain nonviolent offenders sentenced to at least 30 days. It has involved 30,000 work-hours and has had an 89 percent success rate among the 205 offenders involved. Salt Lake County has also held a groundbreaking ceremony for an adult detention complex on a 38-acre site. The facility's completion is scheduled for December 1998. This complex will use some of the latest technologies, including a videoconferencing system, an officer duress alarm system, an electronic filing system, and heated food carts.
