Data from the Maryland Uniform Crime Reporting program revealed that 840 carjackings took place in 1996, a 6- percent decline from the 895 carjackings in 1995 and that overall index crime declined 3 percent from 1995 to 1996.
Abstract
The largest number of carjackings took place in Baltimore City, followed by Prince George's County. The statewide amount of violent crime decreased 5 percent between 1995 and 1996, while index property crime decreased 3 percent. The State experienced 588 murders, 1,913 forcible rapes, 19,933 robberies, 24,745 aggravated assaults, 50,346 breaking or entering offenses, 173,660 larceny-thefts, and 36,066 motor vehicle thefts in 1996. A total of 1,079 cases of arson occurred during the year. Tables and figures
