A total of 1,843 anti-Semitic incidents against property and persons were reported to the Anti-Defamation League in 1995.
Abstract
These actions took place in 42 States and the District of Columbia. The number of incidents declined 11 percent from 1994. This decline was the first since 1992 and the largest decline in 10 years. However, the decline contrasts with the seriousness of many of the incidents. An extremely violent arson incident in New York City led to several deaths. In addition, the number of cemetery desecrations increased over 1994. The 118 incidents on college campuses represented the first decline since 1987. The incidents included 1,116 incidents of harassment and 727 incidents of vandalism, including 362 incidents of vandalism committed against public property and 145 against synagogues and other Jewish institutional targets. The four States reporting the highest totals of anti-Semitic incidents were New York (n=370), California (n=264), New Jersey (n=228), and Florida (n=152). Figures; photographs; and appended tables, chart indicating the provisions of State laws on hate crimes, list of college campus incidents, and addresses of national, regional, and overseas offices of the Anti-Defamation League
