The study defines "repeat victimization" as "a person, object, or place being victimized more than once during a limited period of time." Several forms of repeat victimization can be distinguished. It can be related or unrelated to an earlier incident; offender or offenders may or may not be the same; and the victim and offender may or may not know each other. The literature review shows that research has mainly addressed the extent and the policy implications and to a lesser extent the possible causes of repeat victimization. Research into the relationship with area characteristics and also what motivates offenders to target victims repeatedly appears to offer promising points of departure. Information is provided on distinguishing features of repeat victimization, victim characteristics, area characteristics, offenders, crime types, prevention, crime- oriented prevention, probation and aftercare, victim support, and information sources to assist in preventing repeat victimization.
