This manual contains information to guide development and implementation of effective substance abuse treatment services for women.
Abstract
Although written for a wide audience, the manual is most relevant to federally funded programs that serve mainly low-income populations. The manual includes an Introductory chapter (1) and seven informatory chapters: (2) Women and Alcohol and Other Drugs: An Overview, including a summary of the current epidemiology of substance abuse among women; (3) Treatment of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse: An Introduction; (4) Outreach to and Identification of Women, a discussion of barriers to engaging women in treatment and outreach strategies to deal with those barriers; (5) Comprehensive Treatment for Women; (6) Continuing Care and Follow-Up; (7) Program Management Issues; and (8) Reflections. In addition to serving as a guide for developing and implementing treatment programs, this manual also is a research guide which helps to make evident the gaps in current information.
