This manual provides background information and practical guidelines to help parents and other adults understand child abuse and neglect, protect children from it, and respond appropriately if abuse is suspected.
Abstract
The text explains the characteristics and physical and behavioral indicators of neglect, physical abuse, child sexual abuse, and emotional abuse and presents case examples of abused children. Other sections discuss the physical and psychological impacts of victimization; actions to take to prevent child abuse in religious, community youth groups, and child care centers; ways to discuss safety with children. It also presents guidelines for rating a child's safety, a form to determine the financial costs and benefits of working outside the home, strategies for instilling confidence and self-esteem in children, and guidelines for reporting suspected abuse or neglect. Lists of recommended reading materials, organizations from which to obtain more information, and national hotlines from which to obtain immediate help
