These materials provide background information and guidelines for the process by which the Social Security Administration suspends Social Security benefits to prisoners, together with a fact sheet for inmates.
Abstract
The guideline notes that Social Security benefits are suspended if a beneficiary is sentenced to more than 1 year in prison or confined to an institution at public expense as a result of verdicts such as guilty but insane. Prisoners whose benefits are suspended are identified by the Social Security's national prisoner matching operation and by reports of inmates and third parties. The guidelines explain the data required to process a suspension and provides specifications for magnetic tape, diskettes, and paper records. Additional materials focus on benefits under different legislative provisions related to Social Security, the provisions of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, and information needed by inmates.
