Empirical research on victimology is examined, and social- structural, institutional, collective, and abuse of power aspects of victimization are considered.
Abstract
Victimology research methods include empirical victimization studies and interviews with victims. Empirical research has provided information on the incidence and prevalence of victimization; the extent to which victimization inflicts physical, psychological, and social damage; and people's feelings of personal safety and their fear of being victimized by crime. Empirical research has also collected information on the likelihood of victimization and on what victims experience during victimization. Following an examination of several victimological theories, the discussion turns to characteristics and targets of victimization. The focus is on the victimization of women, fear of crime, victim-oriented crime prevention, victim assistance, and victim treatment. 108 references
