This report presents statistics on offenders admitted to, detained in, or discharged from psychiatric hospitals in England and Wales between 1985 and 1995 under mental health legislation.
Abstract
The data revealed that 2,482 offenders were detained in hospitals at the end of 1995; this number was higher than in any of the previous 10 years. The number of unsentenced or untried persons transferred from prison declined by 12 percent between 1994 and 1995, from 536 to 474. The number of persons admitted under restricted hospital orders declined from 251 in 1994 to 203 in 1995; this number was the lowest in 3 years. The number of restricted persons discharged into the community declined by 27 percent between 1994 and 1995, from 408 to 298. The number of restricted persons in special hospitals increased by 10 percent between 1994 and 1995, while those in other hospitals increased by 7 percent. Figures, tables, and notes
