Abstract
Of the total offenses, 93 percent involved crimes against property and 6 percent involved violent crimes. Twenty-four of 43 police forces recorded fewer crimes in the 12 months ending in June 1996 than they did in the previous 12 months. Overall violent crime increased by 10 percent to 331,300 offenses, the largest increase in 8 years. Burglaries decreased by 16,500 or 1 percent to 1.2 million, the third consecutive 12-month decline. Thefts decreased by 38,100 to 2.4 million, a 2-percent drop. Within this category, violent crimes declined by 10,100 or 1 percent to 1.3 million. 5 notes, 7 tables, and 8 figures
