The five papers in Section I address historical, definitional, theoretical, and research matters that pertain to LRE. Collectively, the papers establish LRE's history of solid program development and its increasingly focused and refined conceptualization. LRE operates from an explicit and eclectic theoretical foundation and lends itself to the kind of evaluation research that can enhance its utility. The seven papers in Section II illustrate the versatility of LRE applications through programming in detention, diversion, and training school contexts. One chapter discusses how LRE programs can accommodate special education students, and another chapter provides guidelines for mobilizing community resources for LRE programs. The five papers in Section III focus on the initiatives to expand the basic LRE approach and merge LRE with other, compatible programs. These initiatives include the linking of LRE to national and community service; the use of theater drama to teach LRE to diverted youth; the Teen Court Program; and the Teens, Crime, and the Community Program.
