This second edition has been updated to incorporate the latest research, concepts, and practices in police management, including five new chapters on police organizations in transition; selection and diversity; behavior, safety, and health; resource use; and control and accountability. Other chapters focus on the development of management theory, organization and group influence, the development of human resources, motivation and job design, leadership and management, planning and research, and organizational change and development. The text incorporates seven major themes. One is the importance of the humane treatment of employees and citizens, and another is the integration of organizational expectations with those of the community. Further, relevant principles, models, and theories from the social sciences are used, and research studies that use the scientific method are incorporated. A fifth theme is the analysis of individuals, groups, the organization, and the organizational environment. A sixth theme is that the interrelated and interdependent parts of a system are related to the whole and to the environment; management practices vary as circumstances and problems change.
