This report profiles the Federal grant program entitled "Safe Kids-Safe Streets," which provides financial assistance for comprehensive, community-wide programs to reduce child abuse and neglect and stop the cycle of violence.
Abstract
The five sites that are receiving awards are Huntsville, Ala.; the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of the Chippewa Indians in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich.; Kansas City, Mo.; Toledo, Ohio; and Chittenden County, Vt. The five sites will share almost $2.7 million to implement programs. The five sites will work toward four common goals. They will restructure the criminal and juvenile justice systems to improve the handling of child abuse cases; they will coordinate parenting programs and support services to protect youth who are at risk of being abused or neglected; they will improve data collection through information sharing across systems and agencies; and they will launch prevention education and public awareness campaigns to teach community residents how to detect, report, and prevent child abuse. The five sites have already made progress in bringing together many different elements to form a more coordinated and effective response to child abuse and neglect. For each of the five projects, this report provides the name of the agency receiving the grant; the amount of the grant; the purpose of the program; the name, address, and phone number of the local contact; and the name and phone number of a contact person at the Office of Justice Programs.
