The Colonie Youth Court in Colonie, N.Y. adjudicated its first two cases in January 1995 and handled a total of 100 juvenile cases from the Colonie Police Department, Colonie Justice Department, and Albany Probation Department.
Abstract
The court's 100 cases were assigned community service by more than 350 volunteer student jurors. The program provided a wide range of educational classes and community service work projects. It also allowed each defendant to serve as a juror on a subsequent case as the final step in completing the peer-imposed sentence by participating positively in the justice system. The youth court was initiated in May 1993 and held the first training class for its student members on September 27, 1994. The program received grants from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, New York Bar Foundation, Albany Bar Foundation, and New York State Division of Probation and Corrections, as well as substantial in-kind support from Federal and State criminal justice agencies.
