Abstract
For the purposes of this report, lethal terrorist actions are defined as 'acts of violence committed by terrorists in which Americans are killed or where there is a demonstrable intention to kill or seriously injure American citizens. This chronology summarizes all recorded terrorism-related deaths, assassinations, and attempted assassinations of Americans. Kidnappings are included when U.S. hostages were killed or when they disappeared without any communication from the kidnappers. Bombings and rocket attacks directed at U.S. facilities are included only when people (either Americans or foreign nationals) were killed or injured. Attempted bombings, where the device was discovered and defused, are not included since no act of violence occurred. In addition to a chronological incident summary by year, there is an overall summary of total lethal attacks for 1973-85, the number of Americans killed in terrorist incidents for 1973-85, the number of lethal terrorist attacks by region, and the names of the most prominent terrorist groups involved in lethal anti-American attacks. The overall summary also lists the number of Americans killed overseas in lethal terrorist attacks by year and occupation and lethal terrorist attacks involving Americans by target and year.
