This report summarizes the activities carried out in 1996 by the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network, which consists of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, the affiliated regional institutes, and the associate institutes and centers.
Abstract
The report also presents information on the activities of the International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council. The organizations' activities focused mainly on the objectives set by the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its fifth session, as contained in the plan for the period 1998-2001, and the subprograms of the budget for the 1997-97 biennium. The organizations were involved in documentation services and publications, fundraising and promotional efforts, training, research, technical cooperation and advisory services, information dissemination, and conferences and seminars. Issues addressed included promotion and maintenance of the rule of law and good governance, criminal justice reform and the strengthening of legal institutions, international cooperation in combating transnational crime, strategies for crime prevention and control, the use of United Nations standards in crime prevention and criminal justice, and technical cooperation.
