The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) is discussed with respect to its purpose, size, uses, and the creation of NCJRS Online to integrate its electronic services and make them and its databases available on the Internet.
Abstract
NCJRS is a national as well as international service for exchanging information related to criminal and juvenile justice. NCJRS has more than 130,000 items in its document database and received and filled more than 52,000 requests for information in one recent 8-month period. It will continue to use mail, telephone, and facsimile as long as they are needed by those it serves. NCJRS has also taken steps to use the technologies of the personal computer to automate these reference and dissemination functions, as well as to provide additional services. Features of NCJRS Online include e-mail, electronic publication, the sharing of resources, links to other sites on the Internet. Through these services, the National Institute of Justice is at the beginning of a better way to share advances in the improvement of the administration of justice worldwide.
