The discussion focused on the development and use of national and international crime and criminal justice information and on the introduction of information technology in the administration of criminal justice. The discussion also sought to determine ways in which international cooperation could support these efforts, particularly within the framework of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program. Discussions focused on recent trends that has led to the international interest in the issue of computerization, experiences in using the new information technology, the need for a research policy that would promote both basic and action-oriented research, and related work being conducted by United Nations agencies. Several speakers urged member countries to share their expertise and increase financial and technical assistance on a bilateral and multilateral basis. The availability of expertise and the increasing willingness to share information and expertise were also noted.
