This book summarizes relevant materials to guide the formulation of drug policies in Australia that have credibility and a wide degree of public acceptance.
Abstract
The two key premises of the book are that the power of the drug black market should be minimized and that the act of using drugs should not be illegal. Drug policies should be formulated that establish a controlled drug market, control drug availability, provide full information and advice to drug users, and ensure that drug users have free and ready access to medical care and welfare authorities. Book chapters look at the classification and nature of drugs, drug dependence, cannabis and other drugs in common use, drug treatment, drug legislation, costs and effects of drug prohibition, the role of the media in drug use and control, and the importance of drug education. Drug control experiences in England, Switzerland, and the Netherlands are also described. Supplemental information on drug legislation and drug legalization is appended. Endnotes and tables
