The Japanese government presented a national statement at the Ninth United Nations (UN) Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders in Cairo, Egypt, that addressed the crime situation in Japan and countermeasures.
Abstract
The UN conference focused on international cooperation in crime prevention, action against national and transnational economic and organized crime and the role of criminal law in environmental protection, criminal justice and police systems, and crime prevention strategies. The national statement of the Japanese government at this conference covered UN standards and norms and their relevance to Japan, the importance of international cooperation, achievements of Japan in the regional forum (the Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders and the Asia Crime Prevention Foundation), and technical cooperation activities of Japan's National Police Agency. The national statement also dealt with features of organized crime in Japan and effective countermeasures, criminal investigative techniques, economic crime, environmental crime, juvenile crime, violent crime, police and prosecution systems, courts, corrections and rehabilitation, urban crime causes and prevention, and crime victim issues.
