The rules are stated from the point of view of a police officer on duty. Police officers who familiarize themselves with the field guide should have no difficulty understanding the rules and applying them to street situations. The field guide is designed for easy reference, with seven sections arranged according to the most common street situations: (1) routine patrol and encounters with private persons; (2) arrest; (3) search and seizure; (4) identification; (5) interrogation; (6) undercover investigations; and (7) asset forfeiture. The field guide is based on decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court. Endnotes in an appendix following each section contain references to the relevant decisions. A table of cases at the end of the field guide lists all cases and pages on which they are cited.
