Steps taken by the New York City Police Department to reduce youth violence in schools are described that focus on how to make schools the focal point of violence reduction efforts and the revision of police department policies on youth crime.
Abstract
Goals of the police department are to require school security plans for every public school in New York City, to refocus police patrol resources on returning truants to school, to devote more police detective resources to strengthening cases against violent young people and those who sell guns to minors, to triple the number of police youth officers, to create a juvenile database to link information on youth violations of every kind, and to enlist the active help and support of the public to secure schools and neighborhood areas where young people congregate during non-school hours. New York City's mayor has made it clear all available resources must be used to reduce violence in and around public schools, and the police department recognizes the problems of guns, youth violence, and drug activity are interrelated. Specific policies and procedures of the police department to make schools and streets safer are outlined, and the importance of revising and expanding police training on youth violence and the youth culture is noted. 2 figures
