This Information Memorandum provides an overview of Wisconsin laws relating to operating a vehicle (motor vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, boat or snowmobile) while intoxicated (OWI) and possession or drinking of alcohol beverages in a motor vehicle.
Abstract
The Memorandum also describes related laws on operating a motor vehicle after license suspension or revocation, relevant laws enacted through the 1995-96 Wisconsin Legislative Session and several other States' innovative laws relating to sanctions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The document is divided into the following sections: (1) Background on Current Law; (2) OWI and OWI-Related Offenses; (3) Implied Consent; (4) Administrative Suspension for High Level Chemical Test; (5) Intoxicants in Motor Vehicles; and (6) Selected Laws in Other States and Recent Proposals Relating to OWI.
