Three weeks of law-related education sessions in Florida were assessed with respect to their positive characteristics, problems, and suggestions for future improvements.
Abstract
The evaluation used information from observation; feedback sheets; and conversations with instructors, staff, and participants. The analysis focused on personnel, curriculum, facilities, schedule, participants, additional services, and evaluations. Results revealed a wide variation in the ability of the instructors to handle the age group involved and indicated the need for at least two Americorps members in each room. In addition, the orientation session was too lengthy and instructors varied with respect to their presentation of the same topics, use of the scenarios, and active involvement of the participants. Moreover, a microphone was not always available for the general sessions; small sessions should have no more than 20 participants to reduce behavior problems and the feeling of being cramped in the small rooms. Participants varied widely in their behavior and needed a consistent and stable discipline policy. The evaluation forms from the participants provide an overview of areas to consider for changes.
