A conference held in November 1996 focused on juvenile justice policies in Great Britain and their impacts on parental attitudes and skills.
Abstract
The opening remarks by the conference chairperson noted the government's Crime and Punishment Bill for Scotland. The legislation aims to ensure that the sentence served more closely matches the sentences imposed by the courts and that supervision on release is targeted at those regarded as high risk. Additional sessions focused on the changes that the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 will bring to parental rights and responsibilities, principles and ethics involved in decision making regarding juvenile offenders, and whether the welfare model and the justice model better empowers parents and helps children. Additional sessions focused on research on the impacts of changing forms of families and how the legal system can enable parents to fulfill their parental roles. Review of book on child murders and list of future conferences and seminars
