Guidelines are presented for parents and caregivers to prevent the effects and costs of violence related to physical injury and death, the emotional harm caused by raising children in a state of fear and mistrust, and financial costs to society of court fees and jails.
Abstract
Children need to feel special, and their self-esteem can be encouraged in many ways: communicating often and openly, disciplining in a way that teaches and enforces, offering opportunities to make choices and decisions, providing chances to succeed, and teaching healthy habits. In the case of child abuse, skilled professionals and organizations are available to help parents and children in abusive relationships. When parents and children feel angry or stressed, techniques are available to express and minimize these feelings and avoid the possibility of violence. The importance of choices and good decision-making skills and the effect of violence in the media on children are discussed. Ways in which parents and caregivers can help children cope with antisocial peer pressure are examined. The need to make children aware of the danger of firearms and the benefits of acquiring conflict resolution skills are addressed. Specific tips and activities parents and caregivers can use to prevent violence are listed. References
