This report provides comparative data on California's younger offenders--inmates under 25 years of age, offenders ages 25 through 29, and those 30 and older--as of December 31, 1989 and December 31, 1994.
Abstract
At the end of 1989 specific drug offense commitments in California represented approximately 25 percent of total commitments and felony driving-under-the-influence about 2 percent. The report compares the three groups of inmates on variables of gender, race or ethnicity and commitment offense. It also includes data on changes in the profile of the adult correctional population during the same time period. The data do not include young offenders convicted as adults who were serving their sentences in California Youth Authority facilities. The prison population grew from 87,297 to 125,605 during the 5-year period under review. Commitments for selected violent offenses increased noticeably, particularly among younger offenders.
