Based on a literature review, this paper examines gang violence, particularly in schools.
Abstract
The extent of the problem, including an overview of the development of gangs, is discussed, along with a brief discussion of the various types of gangs. Also presented are recommendations for reviewing school policies and procedures, with the goal of gang prevention and control. In addition, a multifaceted approach is recommended that broadens the school's efforts beyond just disciplinary procedures. The literature review shows that schools have every reason to be concerned about gang violence. The author advises that efforts to control the presence or development of gangs on school campuses must focus on more than just a disciplinary, rule-enforcement strategy directed at suppression. Schools must develop a multifaceted program, with part of it being the development of gang awareness for the general school community. Schools must also seek help from law enforcement officials and social service agencies. Schools should be involved in comprehensive community efforts in gang prevention and intervention. Included in the authors' nine recommendations for schools are a focus on improved academic performance for all students, the active teaching of positive social behavior, the implementation of behavior reduction systems, the monitoring of student behaviors through accurate recordkeeping, and parental collaboration and parent training programs. 34 references
