This first volume of a four-volume report of the 1997 Drug Court Survey contains general program information provided primarily by drug court judges and judicial staff from the 93 responding drug courts.
Abstract
General background information on the responding adult drug court programs addresses the populations served, court caseloads, drug court jurisdiction, and case volume. Information and data on the responding drug court programs encompasses program goals; the locus of the program in the judicial process; targeted offenses; participant eligibility criteria; program capacity, enrollments, and characteristics of client population; screening and assessment process; program organization; program resources and procedures; program contacts with participants; and the information and monitoring system. The section on program evaluation and assessment provides information and data on the criteria being used to assess the effectiveness of the drug court program, follow-up with program participants, and evaluation activities undertaken to date. Another section of this volume focuses on program operational and planning issues. Some of the issues addressed are the most serious problems encountered in designing or implementing the drug court program and their resolution, unanticipated issues and their resolution, agency and organizational support for the drug court, and tasks needed to institutionalize the drug court. Other issues considered are modifications and enhancements planned for next year, advice to colleagues who are considering implementation of a drug court, and technical assistance and training needs identified.
