Data indicated 75 motor vehicle robberies were reported in 1995 that did not meet the carjacking definition. Of the carjackings reported in 1995, 937 persons were victims; 2 were victims of homicide and 40 victims sustained serious injuries. The number of offenders involved in carjackings in 1995 totaled 1,373. The handgun was the most often used weapon, and it was used in 68 percent of carjackings. By gender, victims of carjackings were 71 percent male, 28 percent female, and 0.3 percent unknown. Blacks accounted for 66 percent of carjacking victims. The age of carjacking victims ranged from 6 to 88 years, with 64 percent between 19 and 40 years. By gender, perpetrators of carjackings were 93 percent male, 4 percent female, and 3 percent unknown. Carjacking offenders were 93 percent male and 89 percent black. Their age ranged from 13 to 57 years, with 63 percent between 15 and 26 years. Firearms were used in 72 percent of carjackings.
