This chapter describes, in the words of an undercover Federal agent, a distribution network supplying LSD to high school students and young adults.
Abstract
The chapter presents information about the workings and structure of an organized LSD sales and distribution network and the users and dealers who made up that network. The chapter gives particular attention to the marketing and substance abuse practices that distinguish LSD dealers from dealers of other illegal substances, for example, cocaine and heroin. This study was designed to: (1) determine how a particular LSD network was organized, managed and linked to outside manufacturers and distributors; (2) ascertain how LSD was obtained, distributed and sold; and (3) understand the behaviors, motivations and lifestyles of the individuals involved in the network. The network contained two distinct types of distributors. One group comprised students who were for the most part academically successful, who maintained high grades, ran their businesses efficiently, and used LSD occasionally. The other group¦s dealings were disorganized and haphazard, without concern for confidentiality, caution or secrecy, and they maintained regular use to the point of impairing their ability to conduct business. The organization was infiltrated by undercover police work through one of the latter group. There was considerable naivete and simplicity of perspective among network members. When the head and members of the network were arrested, they and their friends and families were shocked at the potential for serious legal consequences.
