The province has 17 municipal police services; all other cities, towns, and villages with a population over 500 are policed by contract with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The commission's main function is to promote adequate and effective policing throughout the province and the preservation of peace, crime prevention, police effectiveness, and improved police-community relations. The commission held two regular meetings; two training committee meetings were also held. The commission also acted in a coordinating role between the police service and the Canadian Police College in the allocation of course spaces and the attendance of officers.
