Buel regards domestic assault as the incubator of crime in society and focuses on rescuing abused children before they become irretrievably damaged. She was physically and verbally abused for 2 years before she left the relationship in 1977. She later worked as a paralegal and helped create a nutrition program for low-income women and families and a network of safe houses for battered women in New Hampshire. Subsequently she became a board member of organizations focusing on domestic violence and the director of the Massachusetts committee on domestic violence policy. She now serves on the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence and plans to start a national domestic violence training institute after she moves to Austin, Tex. this year. She has spoken on domestic assault in every State and has trained thousands of physicians, attorneys, court personnel, and social workers about detecting and preventing domestic violence.
