The design plans for the projected new subway line in Paris, France suggest that its security features will make it a success in crime control.
Abstract
The design for Meteor includes a wider range of situational crime prevention measures than the existing subway systems in Paris, Washington, D.C., or Hong Kong. Its security features are consistent with the most recent developments in crime prevention strategies. Security is a crucial part of the design of stations, entrances, and lobbies; platforms; trains; and the equipment and procedures of security personnel. However, two characteristics seem to be less than optimal. First, the activation feature of the closed-circuit television cameras may not allow continuous surveillance. Second, a complex chain of command may result in a delayed response of transit police to the scene of crimes. However, only objective empirical evaluations will determine whether the system succeeds in controlling crime. Tables, photograph, notes, and 18 references (Author abstract modified)
