Chapter 1 describes the objectives, structure, administration, and financing of the courts. Chapter 2 presents the caseload activity report for court operations for 1995. Information and data encompass criminal cases, civil cases, Family Court, surrogate's courts, appellate courts, Community Dispute Resolution Centers Program, and standards and goals. There were 3,706,511 new cases filed in the trial courts of the Unified Court System in 1995. Of these, 3,339,783 filings reached court calendars. During 1995, nearly 69,000 felony indictments and superior court informations were filed in Supreme and county courts throughout the State. Since 1979, criminal filings in city and district courts have increased 53 percent, most of it in the last few years. Family Court continues to be confronted with large caseloads. Between 1990 and 1995, total caseloads increased 4 percent in New York City and 10 percent statewide. Chapter 3 of this report profiles education and training programs conducted, coordinated, or assisted by the Office of Court Administration in 1995. Chapter 4 summarizes the legislation sponsored by the Office of Court Administration at the 1995 session of the legislature and rules revised or added during that year. Three appendixes consist of other programs (retainer and closing statements, statements of approval of compensation, appointment of fiduciaries, attorney registration, and adoption affidavits); Family Court data; and public documents listing.
