This report presents Washington State Uniform Crime Reports statistics for 1996.
Abstract
Data address the total number of index crimes, index offenses, the value of property stolen and recovered, the number of police officers killed or assaulted, the rate of crime clearances, arrests, and law enforcement employees. Index crimes in Washington State totaled 319,941 for 1996, constituting 59.3 offenses per 1,000 population; this is a decrease in the number of index crimes of 3.1 percent compared to 1995. There was a 20.8-percent clearance rate for all index crime reported in 1996, compared to a clearance rate of 21.3 percent for 1995. A total of 262,013 arrests were made in 1996, an increase of 4.3 percent from 1995. There were no law enforcement officers killed feloniously during 1996. A total of 1,513 law enforcement officers were assaulted during the year, a decrease of 6.8 percent from 1995. Data on offenses encompass domestic violence and hate/bias crime.
