The Sabine Parish Detention Center in Many, La. is a modular, 104-bed facility for males; it is one of the most modern in the State.
Abstract
The jail project was initiated by the sheriff and planned by a volunteer committee of area business leaders and other concerned citizens. Citizens voted for an increased sales tax to pay for the jail. Site selection was another major undertaking. Construction began in October 1993 and ended in October 1994. The facility has two dormitories holding 36 persons on each side and two dormitories holding 18 people each in front. All dorms have intercoms so that inmates and correctional officers can converse without opening doors. The dormitories include shower and toilet facilities, dayrooms, telephones, and televisions. A recreation area is located behind the jail. Future plans include expanded agricultural operations. Inmates currently work in farming and firewood sales. The old jail has been converted into a women's facility. Photographs
