The research also sought to determine whether the MAI is valid for female inmates and whether anger levels differed according to traits such as the type of offense, age, and years in prison. The 98 randomly selected female offenders and 68 randomly selected male offenders were selected from the entire population of a large midwestern correctional institution that included all three levels of custody for both sexes. Male and female inmates received comparable scores on the composite. Female inmates convicted of crimes against persons had the highest overall scores. Males convicted of property crimes had the highest scores among the males. Levels of anger were also highest in the younger inmates. Findings supported the use of the MAI with both male and female offenders and indicated that anger does not have multiple facets. Findings also suggested useful applications of the MAI in dealing with population management and program referral. Tables, appended instrument, and 26 references (Author abstract modified)
