These 11 papers examine racially motivated violence and harassment in Great Britain, with emphasis on current initiatives to prevent and address the problem, research findings on the effectiveness of initiatives, and possible future policy directions.
Abstract
The papers are based on a conference held in 1992 at the University of Leicester in England. Participants at the conference included police, prosecution, and probation officials; representatives of local governments and the Great Britain Home office; education and social service personnel; and academics. An introduction notes that racial incidents have occurred for many years, but their number has increased systematically over the past few years. Racial attacks constitute an endemic and widespread problem, not only in Great Britain but also all over Europe. Other papers discuss these issues and examine multi-agency approaches to racial harassment, practical strategies in education, the findings of a process and survey evaluation of a youth project, and efforts to implement the recommendations of the Racial Attacks Group Report published by the Home Office in 1989. 97 references
