A statistical snapshot of North Carolina's criminal and juvenile justice systems for the 1990-1995 period is presented.
Abstract
Index crime rate data for murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft showed North Carolina crime rates increased by 2.8 percent between 1990 and 1995. In 1990, North Carolina had the 20th highest crime rate in the United States. The violent crime rate in North Carolina rose by 3.7 percent between 1990 and 1995, while the national violent crime rate decreased by 6.7 percent. The total arrest rate grew by 4 percent over the period, the rate at which juvenile and youthful offenders were arrested for designated violent index and property crimes increased by 14.4 percent, the probation supervision rate grew by 17.1 percent, and the incarceration rate increased by 56.2 percent. 9 figures
