This report presents statistics on the races of juveniles at various stages of case processing and dispositions in the Florida juvenile justice system in fiscal year 1994-95, with emphasis on the racial composition of the 168,934 cases at each stage and in each district.
Abstract
The analysis revealed that 44 percent of the intake cases disposed in fiscal year 1994-95 involved black youths; this represented a 2 percent decrease from the previous year. More than half the cases in three districts involved black youths. Black youths represented 50 percent of the cases resulting in commitment; this percentage was a 3 percent decrease from the previous year. Black youths also represented 56 percent of the cases transferred to adult court, a 2 percent increase from the previous year. Black youths represented more than 60 percent of all cases transferred to adult court in three districts. Findings indicated that cases involving minority youths were disproportionately represented at virtually every stage within each district and that the disproportionate representation increased with the severity of disposition. Statewide, minority youths were less likely to be diverted and more likely to be committed or transferred to adult court than were white youths. Figures, tables, and map
