The country had 3,980 male sentenced inmates, 151 female sentenced inmates, 343 male remand inmates, and 14 female remand inmates on the day of the census. Thirty-three percent of sentenced inmates were under 25 years old, 55 percent were under 30 years old, and 20 percent were at least 40 years old. Forty-nine percent of the female sentenced inmates whose ethnic group was known identified themselves as Maori only, 39 percent identified themselves as European only, and 62 percent indicated that they had some Maori ancestry. Forty-five percent of the male sentenced inmates whose ethnic group was known identified themselves as Maori only, 39 percent identified themselves as European only, and 53 percent indicated that they had some Maori ancestry. Thirty-seven percent of female sentenced inmates and 23 percent of the males were serving a custodial sentence of up to 1 year. Ten percent of the females and 6 percent of the males were serving life sentences. Seven percent of the females and 25 percent of the males were serving sentences of more than 5 years. Seventy-seven percent of the female sentenced inmates and 59 percent of the male sentenced inmates were enrolled in inmate programs.
