The board provides benefits to injured victims of crime or to the dependents of someone who died as a result of crime. The benefits are similar to those paid under the Worker's Compensation Act. Filing and processing a claim does not involve a cost to the victim. The automated check-writing system established during the year has improved the efficiency of check preparation and the service to claimants. The working group of Justice and Criminal Injuries Compensation officials also met several times to share information and prepare the information for the annual estimates. The board has also established a process for use by claimants in appealing the board's decision. The board processed 579 applications and approved 434 of them in fiscal year 1996.
